Dental Inlays & Onlays in Anchorage

Dental Inlays and Dental Onlays in Anchorage

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that can serve as an alternative treatment to dental crowns when you have a broken or damaged tooth that may not be severe enough to warrant a crown.

They are often made at the dental lab and can be made out of gold, porcelain or resin, depending on a patient’s needs and aesthetic goals and preferences. An “inlay” refers to a restoration that is created to fit around the center of a tooth; an “onlay” refers to a restoration that includes at least, one cusp of a tooth. Both inlays and onlays are bonded to the surface of damaged teeth and matched to the color of the surrounding teeth.

How are inlays and Onlays Different from Regular Fillings?

The use of fillings versus inlays and inlays depend on the severity of a cavity or tooth injury and what treatment your dentist feels will provide the best overall protection.

Fillings are great for repairing small to medium sized cavities or damage that is not extensive. Typically, fillings are used with a form of composite resin that can match the look and color of your actual teeth. Fillings can be beneficial as they can often be done quickly and same-day, although they do not provide nearly as much long-term protection as an inlay or outlay.

An inlay is often used when a patient has moderate tooth damage or decay. They are used to repair the chewing surface of your tooth and unlike fillings, are often completed over multiple dental treatments. Inlays are prepared through an impression that serves as a mold which is then fabricated and permanently bonded to the surface of your teeth.

An onlay is similar in concept to an inlay, except it is often larger and meant to repair a cavity that resides in the central part of the tooth cusps, which are raised points on your tooth. They often cover the entire chewing surface of your teeth, and are prepared through the same means as an inlay.

Both inlays and inlays are known to strengthen teeth by up to 70 percent and are made by tough materials that can last upwards of 30 years.

Finding Quality Inlays and Onlays in Anchorage

Like with any dental procedures, it’s important that you use a dentist with a solid reputation in the Anchorage area. When researching a dentist, be sure to look at what services they offer, if they have extensive experience working with inlays and onlays, the type of materials they use and what to expect when you have an inlay or outlay put in. Check testimonials and Yelp reviews, and feel free to call the practice itself.
