Sedation Dentistry in Anchorage

Sedation Dentistry to Help Reduce Dental Anxiety

It’s fairly common for most people to be anxious when it comes to a dental appointment. Even a basic cleaning can arouse stress for some patients which is why Delaney Park Dental offers sedation dentistry, which uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures.

Sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry” (although not medically accurate), it can be utilized for everything from invasive procedures to even a simple tooth cleaning. Sedation dentistry can be used to help alleviate anxiety and turn a stress-inducing visit into a pleasant experience. This procedure varies based on the severity of fear or anxiety for each individual patient.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation, also known as “procedural sedation and analgesia,” is the process by which sedatives are administered before a dental procedure with the express purpose of helping a patient to relax. Patients remain awake and responsive during dental treatment, and no pain should be experienced. The use of a sedative is simply to reduce dental fear and anxiety, and help the patient feel comfortable and relaxed through out a procedure.

In most cases, conscious sedation is considered “light” or “moderate” but can also be referred to as “sleep dentistry,” despite the fact that patients remain conscious during the procedure.

Dentists offer different types of sedation based on any one’s specific level of anxiety including:

  • Light Sedation — Patients are minimally sedated and will feel relaxed, awake and alert

  • Moderate Sedation — Patients are conscious during the procedure, but often do not remember the specifics of the experience. Often patients feel groggy following this but wake up easily.

  • Deep Sedation — This is not usually categorized as conscious sedation, as in this situation, patients are either semi-or completely unconscious during the procedure.

With Deep sedation, most patients will not regain consciousness until after the drug wears off and does take longer to recover. Conscious sedation can be administered though a variety of means including inhalation or through oral medication.

Why People Love Sedation Dentistry

According to the Dental Fears Research Clinic, between 5 and 8 percent of Americans avoid the dentist out of fear.

Another 20% claim that they will only make a dental appointment when absolutely necessary. With all this in mind, it is no wonder that people love sedation dentistry. The ability to get the dental care one needs while at the same time having a means of reducing fear and anxiety is a godsend to many people. With all the options at ones disposal, the fear of the dentist can be reduced greatly.

If you suffer from any of the following conditions, then Sedation Dentistry may be right for you:

  • Having sensitive teeth

  • A bad gag reflex

  • Can’t sit still in the dentists chair

  • Are due for a large amount of dental work

  • Have a low pain threshold

Another reason that people love sedation dentistry is that while there are always risks to any type of sedation, they are mild at best, and your dentist will go over your medical history prior to administration of a sedative to ensure you are a good candidate.

What’s even better? Sedation therapy is not just for adults, it can be administered to children as well, making a visit to the dentist all the more pleasant.
